The following article contains spoilers from Batman #130, available now from DC Comics.
Batman has made a number of strange costume choices over the years. From the rainbow costume, he once wore, to even the outlandish design of the Batman of Zur-en-Arrh. However, one of his most questionable decisions, the trunks, finally got a little justification.
In Batman #130 (by Chip Zdarsky, Jorge Jimenez, Tomeu Morey, and VC’s Clayton Cowles), after being left adrift in space, Batman once again did the impossible by successfully calculating how to safely reenter Earth’s atmosphere using only the debris left around him. During his descent though, he used his trunks as a makeshift oxygen mask, saving his life, and making the entire trip worth it. In short, the silliest part of his costume kept him alive.
Batman’s Trunks Just Saved His Life
Fans of the new run will note that Batman’s battle against Failsafe has not been going well. An ambush on the Justice League’s moon base left the entire facility destroyed, and Batman floating in space without any conventional means of getting back to Earth alive. Still, Batman thrives in impossible situations, and this one might have been the greatest test of his skills. Using the surrounding debris, Batman managed to inch his way back to Earth, intending to carefully reenter its atmosphere and land near the Fortress of Solitude.
