Cosplayer and Writer Ani-Mia Talks Bettie Page, Comics, and Costumes

Ani-Mia may be best known for cosplay, but if you’ve visited a comic book shop recently, you might also have seen her name on Bettie Page: The Alien Agenda, published by Dynamite. In addition, she has been writing for Otaku USA for seven years. Mia visited Minnesota for this year’s Twin Cities Con and was kind enough to chat with me about everything geeky.

Her love for cosplay is clear. “I love seeing how people react, especially little kids. It’s like being a Disney princess at a park. You get to be that person for them,” she said. “I love doing obscure cosplays like stuff from the ’80s. It’s not something everyone will recognize.” Mia has done many cosplays over the years, but one of her most memorable has been Mantis. “People actually thought that I was Mantis. … It’s a character that I do find that I look the most like.” She says one of the biggest challenges with cosplay is Takintime: “We all get so busy and if people do it as a hobby and with working 40 to 50 hours a week. We all have life stuff going on. Finding time and motivation in life, in general, is challenging.”
In addition to Mia’s passion for cosplay, she has “always been in love with writing,” she told me. “I used to write short cheesy horror stories.” When Dynamite approached her about writing Bettie Page, she said, she completed the whole script in a week. She loves…
