The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special director James Gunn shares a photo of Michael Rooker and Luke Klein in their physical Ravagers costumes.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special writer-director James Gunn has shared a behind-the-scenes photo featuring Yondu actor Michael Rooker and young Peter Quill actor Luke Klein, as well as peeled back the curtain on how the Disney+ special’s animated segments came to life.
While Rooker and Klein only appear in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special via animation, the two were physically on-set for its production. On social media, Gunn posted a photo of the two sporting their Ravagers costumes, though Rooker is not wearing the makeup and prosthetics used to turn him into Yondu in live-action.
“For [The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special], we used old-school rotoscoping animation in the style of the Ralph Bakshi films I liked growing up — and to give us that [1970s and ’80s] nostalgic Christmas Special feel,” Gunn wrote on Instagram. “We filmed actors Luke Klein, Michael Rooker [and] Sean Gunn [and] then traced the footage frame-by-frame. Luke’s features were altered to more closely resemble young Peter, Rooker’s fin was added, [and] Sean was reduced in size to his younger self. Wonderful animation work by [Stoopid Buddy Stoodios].”
