One Israeli researcher named David Shuldman has tirelessly worked to release data from government agencies. Shuldman successfully obtained data through a FOIA request on neonatal deaths from the Israeli health insurance fund known as Maccabi. The insurer currently covers 25% of Israelis.

The neonatal deaths are defined as deaths that occurred in a baby’s first four weeks of life, from birth until 28 days later. According to the quarterly reports Shuldman obtained from Maccabi, the number of neonatal deaths in 2019 remained very low, hovering between 4 and 8. The same shows for 2020, and in December of that same year, Israel began its Covid-19 vaccination campaign.

By the second quarter of 2021 (April to June), the number of newborn deaths jumped three-fold to 17, which dipped in the third quarter, only to rise again to 18 in the last quarter of the year. Because these numbers hardly change on a month-to-month basis, these spikes are nearly triple the usual rate of infant deaths. In February 2021, the Israeli Ministry of Health started to recommend the mRNA vaccines to pregnant women who were in their second and third trimesters, which coincides with these latest findings. The second spike could be related to Israel’s aggressive booster vaccination campaign, which took place in August and September and which heavily targeted pregnant women.
