Steampunk festival debuts in West Palm Beach

In case you didn’t know, Steampunk is a bit of a mashup between Victorian-era chic and retro sci-fi (a la 19th century) and even a little American Wild West thrown in for good measure.
Still not getting it?
Then maybe it can be cleared up for you on Nov. 12 and 13 at the first-ever Steampunk Adventurers Weekend at Yesteryear Village in West Palm Beach.
“Steampunk takes place in a timeline where steam is the driving force in innovation,” says Evan Narlinger, the event’s producer. “This is not a reenactment, so it doesn’t have to be exact. There are fewer rules than in some other subcultures. It is inspired by great works of literature like ‘20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’ by Jules Verne.”
Though Steampunk attire is not required, it’s heartily encouraged. In addition to rides and vendors, there will be family-friendly live music, cabaret performances, fashion shows, scavenger hunts, magicians, dueling demonstrations, games, street entertainers and panel discussions.
“Once our guests cross under the historic arch that graces the entrance, they will be brought to a different time and place,” Narlinger says. “As they work their way up the main walk, they will be greeted with music and roaming entertainers.
“Once they turn the corner by the old schoolhouse, they will enter the best party in town with magicians, balloon twisters, face painters, music and some special guests.”
