JEDDAH: Lauded US director Oliver Stone is set to head the jury at the second edition of the Red Sea International Film Festival, it was announced on Monday at Shangri-La Jeddah in the presence of local and international celebrities and local press.
Under the slogan “Film is Everything,” the festival will feature 131 feature and short films, including 23 Saudi short films, 28 international short films, and seven feature films.

It will also provide a platform for Arab filmmakers and industry professionals from around the world to connect, host, and present a series of events, masterclasses, and workshops to support emerging talent.

During the festival, an official competition will be held for long and short films from Asia, Africa and the Arab world. Winners from each competition will be announced on Dec. 8.

Samaher Mously, director of marketing and communications at the event, said: “RSIFF is not just a film festival, it is a cultural forum in which we exchange our technical, cultural experiences, knowledge, and discover new dimensions. It serves as an important platform through which we support the film industry at the local and regional levels.”

Festival CEO Mohammed Al-Turki also unveiled the opening and closing films.

Cross-cultural British rom-com “What’s Love Got to Do With It” will open the festival, which runs from Dec. 1-10.

The star-studded event, now in its fourth outing, took place at the National Museum of Qatar and spotlighted renowned and aspiring creatives in fashion in the Middle East and North Africa region.

DUBAI: From an awards night to a fashion show, Bella Hadid and Naomi Campbell had an eventful week in Qatar. 

On Friday, Hadid and Campbell walked a fashion show to support education and investment in young creative and business talent from emerging regions, specifically in Africa, the diaspora and developing communities around the world. 

The show, held under the patronage of Sheikha Al-Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani, was part of Campbell’s new global charitable initiative, EMERGE, which she launched this week in partnership with Qatar Creates. 

EMERGE is dedicated to uniting the fashion and creative industries. 

Hadid, Campbell and the other models wore a selection of award-winning fashion designers from Africa, the diaspora and the Middle East, such as Thebe Magugu, Bianca Saunders and Abdel El-Tayeb. 

On the runway, Hadid wore a black coat dress with a beaded chain around her neck. Her makeup was bold with a black graphic eyeliner and bleached eyebrows. 

Campbell, 52, wore two outfits for the fashion show. The first was a floor-length dress with a hood covering her head and cut-out triangular designs around the chest area. 

Her second dress was a feathered ombre gown in white and blue hues. 

The fashion show was followed by a gala dinner.

DUBAI: Often referred to as the Marilyn Monroe of the East, the late Arab icon Hind Rostom left her mark on the region’s film industry, having starred in more than 70 movies.

Born Nariman Hussein Murad in Alexandria, Egypt, on Nov. 12, 1929, her father was Turkish and her mother Egyptian. After her parents’ divorce, a young Rostom lived an unsettled life, following her policeman father from city to city until she moved as a teenager to Cairo in 1946.

She first lit up the silver screen as a non-speaking extra in 1949 and went on to turn heads with her first major role in Egyptian film director Hassan Al-Imam’s 1955 “Banat El-Lail” (“Women of the Night”).

She is, perhaps, most famous for her turn as a lemonade vendor in Youssef Chahine’s tense 1958 drama “Cairo Station,” with her complex portrayal of a woman on the fringes of society earning her kudos from the film industry, as well as fans for generations to come.

With her blonde locks and striking features, she soon became a fashion icon with women around the Arab world flocking to copy her latest look — she was even dubbed Egypt’s Brigitte Bardot, and The First Lady of Egyptian Cinema — however, it was her frequent portrayal of strong female characters that earned Rostom an everlasting spotlight.
